19 Oct 2007 - School Pilgrimage to Rome

Under the guidance of the School Chaplaincy team, a group of 39 pupils and 8 staff, including Father Jamie Boyle, School Chaplain and Monsignor Ken McCaffrey, went on a 6-day pilgrimage trip to Rome during the October Break.
The trip was was organised for the second year in a row by Mr M McAvoy, RE Teacher.

Excursions included visits to:

- The Catacoombs of San Callisto, with a special mass celebrated in the Crypt;
Scots College;
- Basilica of St Paul's;
- The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel. This was followed by a mass celebrated within the Vatican, presided over by Fr Patrick Burke;
- St Peter's Basilica and Angelus with the Holy Father in St Peter's Square;
- Basilica of St Mary Major and mass;
- Ancient Rome including a visit to the Colosseum.
- The Scavi archaeological site underneath St Peter's Basilica, where the original grave of St Peter is preserved. This was a particularly unique experience for the group, as very few are granted the opportunity to visit the site.

Fr Burke also gave a guided tour of central Rome, including visits to Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain & the Piazza Navona.

The trip concluded with a final mass at St Peter's Tomb in the Vatican Caves, which was a very special experience. There was also opportunity for the group to pay respects to the Tombs of other Popes, including Pope John Paul II.

Staff and pupils prayed for benefactors at all the churches & shrines visited.

All pupils and staff thoroughly enjoyed the spiritual and cultural experience of the trip.
The group was very grateful to Fr Burke for giving his valuable time and arranging the special trip to the Scavi site and to Fr Boyle and Monsignor McCaffrey.
Special thanks goes to Mr M McAvoy, RE Teacher for organising the trip and Miss P Gallagher PT PSD.
